Enhancing Patrol Effectiveness: KPN Plantations Equips Conservation Team with Technology

Jambi, KPN Plantations further strengthened its commitment to biodiversity protection by organizing the SMART Conservation Tools Workshop. The three-day training, held on October 2–4, 2025, at the Training Center of PT Berkat Sawit Utama (BSU), aimed to strengthen the team’s capacity and effectiveness in monitoring conservation areas.

This activity is part of the Landscape Protection Forum – Meranti-Harapan Collaboration Platform (PKMH) program, which focuses on enhancing cross-company cooperation to sustainably manage and protect the Meranti-Harapan Forest landscape.

Digitalized Monitoring for Advanced Conservation

The workshop centered on introducing SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool), a software designed to simplify the recording, management, and analysis of patrol and biodiversity monitoring data. With this technology, processes that were previously manual can now be conducted digitally, making them more accurate and efficient.

Participants came from various levels and functions, including internal teams from PT BSU and PT Graha Agro Nusantara (GAN)—from staff to field supervisors—as well as representatives from the Head Office (GIS Department, Sustainability Operation, and Landscape Conservation) and partners from the Meranti-Harapan Collaboration Platform.

Throughout the workshop, participants received comprehensive training, covering SMART system configuration, field data entry using the SMART Mobile application, and basic data analysis. To ensure a thorough understanding, participants also conducted direct field practice.

Strengthening Conservation Strategies

This activity serves as a continuation of KPN Plantations’ commitment to strengthening conservation strategies for Rare, Threatened, and Endangered (RTE) species and areas.

Okta, the trainer for the workshop, expressed optimism about the outcome:

“The training went smoothly, and the participants were very enthusiastic. Hopefully, SMART can soon be implemented for biodiversity data collection and patrol protection. The data gathered will greatly strengthen our future conservation strategies,” she said.

Through this capacity-building initiative, KPN Plantations is investing not only in technology but also in the human resources who stand at the forefront of protecting forest sustainability and biodiversity across its operational areas.
